ICC to Unveil Evidence in Landmark In-Absentia Case Against Joseph Kony
By African Bulletin on September 9, 2025
ICC prosecutors will outline war crimes and crimes against humanity charges against LRA leader Joseph Kony in the court’s first in-absentia confirmation hearing. Judges may confirm charges, but Kony cannot be tried without custody; a defense lawyer will represent him. Kony—accused of murder, rape, and sexual enslavement—rose from Acholi altar boy to feared warlord. The LRA fragmented after 2005; Kony remains at large despite U.S.-backed hunts and a $5M reward. Survivors in Uganda welcome the step but lament his continued freedom.
