Conflict in Sudan Destroys Farms and Leaves Millions Facing Hunger
More than two years of conflict have devastated Sudan’s agriculture, leaving 24.6 million people in severe food insecurity and around 637,000 in famine-like conditions. The WHO has confirmed famine in parts of the country. Fighting and looting have crippled irrigation systems and displaced labor, with vital zones such as the Gezira scheme ravaged. Recovery remains stalled due to destroyed infrastructure and lack of funding, while residents report acute shortages of food and water. Even traditional coping strategies, including small-scale mining, are collapsing as the conflict spreads.
Jonglei State Governor Riek Gai Kok has submitted a new cabinet list to President Salva Kiir following backlash over a leaked reshuffle on August 5. The governor’s office accused the presidency of leaking an incomplete list that excluded favored candidates. Officials in Juba now await final appointments. Governor Kok has pledged to prioritize service delivery once his new cabinet is formally installed.
