The three member states of the Economic Community of Great Lakes Countries (CEPGL) – Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – held in Gisenyi, Rwanda, their second meeting, and decided to open the borders and rehabilitate the free circulation of persons and goods in their three bordering provinces.

According to this decision, the crossings will remain open only after evaluating the experimental phase to the position of the Corniche, between the Congolese city of Goma and Gisenyi, which will take place next quarter.
This is a great achievement for the people of the region because “there will be a very positive impact on economic and social development”, stated the CEPGL Executive Secretary, Gabriel Toy. He added that almost all the recommendations adopted at the first meeting of Bukavu have been executed. These include the governors’ visits, the security cooperation – which passes through a joint monitoring of the borders – and the free movement of persons and goods…
The next meeting will be devoted to consider the ways and means that will help to eradicate insecurity, the refugees come back and the infrastructure rehabilitation, mainly in the border crossing Stations. The delegates agreed on the third meeting to be held in Burundi.
