Madagascar: Talks of the last chance?

By on April 30, 2010
Malagasy political leaders are engaged in new talks in Pretoria, South Africa, under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and France. The country doesn’t enjoy anymore the international aid, and the economy is going down, starting with the destruction of thousands of jobs. The people’s living situation is worsening and the social malcontent is building up.

The President of the High Authority of transition is now ready to negotiate with his opponents, because he has no real choice. Indeed, he is in a weak position now that reduces his flexibility: the army that had put him in power is not completely united behind him today. The “Big silent” is forcing politicians to find a solution to this ongoing crisis. This is a barely veiled warning issued by the military, putting though a good and positive pressure on the politicians; because none of them would like to see the Army resuming power.
One thing is certain; the conclusion of an agreement is not synonymous with its application. That is why the consensus that will emerge from Pretoria has to be framed so as to obtain its effective implementation on the ground. All political leaders have to participate in the national revival and resolve the crisis in which the Island is agonising for over a year.
